Introduction
Have you ever cooked food outside, like at a barbecue or a campfire? It’s so fun to eat something you made yourself! But did you know you can cook food using only the sun?
In this project, you will make a solar oven using a pizza box. This oven uses sunlight to warm up food, just like an oven in the kitchen! It’s a fun way to learn about solar energy while making a yummy snack. Let’s get started!
✅ 1 empty pizza box
✅ Aluminum foil (makes sunlight bounce into the oven)
✅ Plastic wrap (traps heat inside)
✅ Black paper (helps absorb heat)
✅ Tape & scissors (for cutting and sticking things)
✅ Newspaper (for insulation)
✅ A wooden skewer or pencil (to hold the lid open)
Build Instruction -
1️⃣ Cut a square in the pizza box lid. Leave one side attached—it will be a flap!
2️⃣ Cover the flap with aluminum foil so it shines and reflects sunlight into the box.
3️⃣ Put plastic wrap over the square opening. This keeps the heat inside!
4️⃣ Place black paper in the bottom of the box. It will absorb heat like a tiny oven!
5️⃣ Roll up newspaper and put it inside the edges of the box. This keeps heat from escaping!
6️⃣ Prop the foil flap up with a pencil or stick to catch lots of sunlight!
Now, Let’s Cook! 🍫🍕
Put some snacks inside, like your favorite s’mores, or nachos and wait while the sun warms up your food—it may take a little time!
How It Works -
🌞 Sun Power – The sun heats up the box, just like an oven!
🔥 Trapping Heat – The plastic wrap keeps the warm air inside.
📚 Keeping Warm – The newspaper stops heat from escaping, so food gets warmer!
