Arithmetic is the basis for all of mathematics. Through arithmetic students learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. In order to learn these skills you should first start with basic problems, and work your way up to more complicated problems.
Addition (+): Addition is the process of combining two or more numbers to find their total sum. In simpler terms, we can add by counting up. For example to do 4 + 2 (+ is the addition symbol) we count up 3 times from 2. We get 5 as our answer.
Subtraction (-): Subtraction is the process of taking one number away from another to find the difference between them. In simpler terms this means to count down. For example to do 4 - 2 (- is the subtraction symbol) we count 2 times from 4. We get 2 as our answer.
Multiplication (×): Multiplication is the process of repeated addition. For example, to multiply 2 by 4, you write it as 2 × 4 = 8, which means adding 2 four times.
Division (÷): Division is the process of splitting a number into equal parts. It's the opposite of multiplication. For example, to divide 10 by 2, you write it as 10 ÷ 2 = 5, which means splitting 10 into two equal parts.
